Taiwanese Opera Comes to K-W Region

The traditional Taiwanese opera is no stranger to overseas Chinese who come from Taiwan. This unique performing folk art has been around for almost a century. Well preserved and actively promoted as a cultural heritage, it has since been greatly enhanced through contemporary stage design and technology. This traditional opera continues to gain popularity and break attendance records at the national theatre in Taiwan.

As one of the most famous and organized Taiwanese opera companies, Ming Hwa Yuan has brought its performances to the world. This large-scale, live performance emphasizes not only sound but also visual presentation and iscaptioned in both English and Chineseto help audiencesappreciate the vivid narratives. There are two storylines to appeal to everyone: one is a romantic comedy and the second is based on the confrontation of two armies, showing the traditional martial arts drama. Each performance consists of folklore, poem-lyrics, dancing, music, and acrobatics. This distinct presentation of Taiwanese opera has won many international accolades.

Invited by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto, thirty-two Ming Hwa Yuan performers will showcase their cultural heritage in Toronto and Waterloo Region this fall. Hosted by Renison University College, one special performance will take place at Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge on Wednesday, October 7th, at 7:00 p.m.

Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge is part of the Drayton Entertainment Group. This multi-milliondollar, 500 seat venue built in 2013 is equipped with world-class lighting and sound design, which will complement Ming Hwa Yuan’s innovative performance in traditional Taiwanese opera.

Admission to the performance is $20.00 or a group rate of $15.00 per ticket for 10 people or more.  Tickets can be purchased online. Renison University College will donate all proceeds from this event to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital Capital Re-development Project.
