Legendary Pianist Janina Fialkowska Plays Chopin with the KWS
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony presents a sublime concert featuring one of Canada’s greatest pianists performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Led by guest conductor Heiichiro Ohyama, and featuring award-winning pianist Janina Fialkowska returning to the KWS, Janina Plays Chopin will be performed on April 1 & 2 at 8 pm at Centre In The Square.
Described by the Toronto Star as a “national treasure,” Janina Fialkowska has been enchanting audiences around the world for over 40 years. Born in Montreal, the legendary Canadian pianist studied at New York’s famous Juilliard School and has been performing with orchestras worldwide ever since. Her performances have garnered critical acclaim, as well as led to the awards of the Order of Canada and Governor General’s 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award.
Making his debut at the KWS is guest conductor Heiichiro Ohyama, an early teacher of KWS Music Director Edwin Outwater. Since beginning his conducting career in 1981, he has led orchestras around the world, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, San Diego Symphony and Kyoto Symphony, among many others. He will lead the KWS through this beautiful program, which includes Dvořák’s powerful Symphony No. 7.
“Heiichiro Ohyama has been a great teacher and influence on me since the age of sixteen, and I am so proud to introduce him to our KWS musicians and audiences,” commented Outwater. “It’s also a particular delight to welcome back Janina Fialkowska, one of the most beautiful pianists I know, to play her beloved Chopin.
