Sand Mandala to be created at THEMUSEUM
Tibetan monks bring Global Peace and Compassion Tour to Downtown Kitchener

Between Sunday, August 23rd and Saturday, August 29th, two Tibetan monks from the Zongkar Choede Monastery will create a sand mandala at THEMUSEUM as part of their Global Peace and Compassion Tour. A sand mandala is a unique and creative form of art practiced by Tibetan monks; they are created out of colourful grains of sand, which are carefully placed on flat surfaces, and illustrate powerful images that reflect an enlightened mind.

“We are very excited to be hosting this important cultural event,” said David Marskell, CEO of THEMUSEUM. “As the cultural hub for South Western Ontario THEMUSEUM aims to deliver fresh, cultural content from around the globe; during this week, visitors will be given the opportunity to watch the creation of a live, traditional piece of art.”

Sand mandalas take multiple days to create because of their intricate designs. The imagery displayed is believed to create a sense of calming for those who view it. Once completed, sand mandalas are ritualistically destroyed in a way that symbolizes the Buddhist belief that nothing in our world is permanent. Afterwards, visitors are able to take home small bags of the sand that was used to create the mandala.

A donation box will be present for visitors wishing to support the Zongkar Choede Monastery, which is 100% reliant on donations. Small, handcrafted items made by Tibetans living in India will also be for sale.

The sand mandala will be created from August 23rd to the 29th. Admission to watch the creation of the sand mandala, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies is free; visitors wishing to explore the rest of THEMUSEUM can do so by purchasing general admission tickets.
