Food spread in 2014

The fifth installment, Salone di Cultura: Citta’ Aperta (which means “open city”), will shine a light on the integration of the Italian diaspora into the contemporary Canadian cultural landscape, through the theme of “openness.”

The one-of-a-kind Salone di Cultura will open with a classic Italian aperitivo (a light, informal serving of food and drink) prepared by Pugliese chef Massimo Bruno, inspired by the foods of Rome. This will be followed by a musical performance of Daniela Nardi’s Espresso Manifesto, with special guest, jazz trumpeter, composer and improviser Lina Allemano. The artistic part of the evening will also include the shockingly beautiful, bronze creations of sculptor Julie Campagna.

The second half of the night offers an interactive panel, moderated by the CBC’s Mary Wiens, where panelists will discuss topics such as the recent demise of OMNI Television and other relevant, timely subjects related to Toronto’s Italian community.

Mark Hayward is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at York University. His work focuses on three areas: 1) Institutions of Diasporic broadcasting media; 2) Economic discourses in popular culture; and 3) Philosophical approaches to technology. He is currently working on a comprehensive history of media in third-language broadcasting in Canada.

Giannone Petricone Associates Inc. Architects is a Toronto based design firm, led since 1995 by Principals Ralph Giannone and Pina Petricone. Partners in both life and work, they share a keen instinct for urban culture, a passion for fashioning provocative spaces and an evolving and inspired search for unconventional uses of forms and materials to ensure innovation and richness at a range of scales. Pina’s creativity and love of design has led to some of the firm’s most remarkable projects including the award-winning Fresh Restaurant, the Centre for Ethics, at the University of Toronto, and Chester Le Daycare and Community Space, a new pilot project for the City of Toronto’s ‘priority neighbourhoods.’

Cristiano DeFlorentiis is the Artistic Director/CoFounder of the Fourth Annual Italian Contemporary Film Fest [ICFF], considered among the most important Italian film festivals in the world, and takes place during Canada and Ontario’s Italian Heritage month. It is presented in Canada in the Cities of Toronto, Vaughan, Hamilton, Montreal and Quebec City.

Angela Pacienza is an Executive Producer at The Globe and Mail where she heads up the video department. Previously she was Director of Online News at The Canadian Press where she looked after online video, interactive graphics and digital wire feeds.

Mary Wiens is an award-winning journalist and producer who can be heard weekdays on CBC Radio One’s most listened-to morning show, Metro Morning, on 99.1 FM in Toronto. Mary’s deep affection for Toronto is expressed in her work as a community volunteer. As a founding member of Roncesvalles Renewed and RoncyWorks, she has been recognized with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal for local projects that help build civic engagement.

The Espresso Manifesto series has become a popular meet-and-greet event for all things Italian and for those interested in promoting the diversity of Canada and our great city of Toronto. To date there have been four editions of the Salone, each more successful than the last.

Daniela Nardi’s Espresso Manifesto gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Tibollo and Associates, National Congress of Italian Canadians and the Italian Cultural Institute.
