Out of Mind, Out of Sight

A film by John Kastner

Producers: John Kastner (JS Kastner Productions), Deborah Parks (JS Kastner Productions), Silva Basmajian (NFB)

Executive Producer: Silva Basmajian (NFB)

What happens to people who suffer from mental illnesses and commit violent crimes? Where do they go? How are they treated? Some patients are sent to forensic psychiatric hospitals-once called asylums for the criminally insane-where they disappear from public view for years. In Out of Mind, Out of Sight, John Kastner gained unprecedented access to one such facility. He follows the treatment of four patients, who share, with stunning frankness, their struggle to gain control over their lives, so they can return to a society that often fears and demonizes them.

Guidelines

A film by Jean-François Caissy

Producer: Johanne Bergeron (NFB) Executive Producer: Colette Loumède (NFB)

Guidelines explores the world of adolescence through a series of tableaux that illustrate the occasionally trying existence of young people at a rural secondary school. During closed-door meetings, the teens interact with various authority figures whose job it is to “set them straight.” Outside classroom hours, though, they regain control of their world, the natural surroundings becoming a playground where they can test the limits of their temporary freedom. Guidelines emphasizes the contrasts between the regulated environment of the classroom and the beckoning freedom of the great outdoors.

Where I’m From is an intimate chronicle that unfolds in the working-class neighbourhood of Verdun, where the filmmaker grew up. The town and the magical banks of the Saint Lawrence River serve as a backdrop for this coming-of-age story that is also a profound inner journey.

Executive Producer: René Chénier (NFB)

With an ingenious assembly of archival footage and animated sequences, Jutra brings us a clever and astute cinephile portrait of Claude Jutra. Through the magic of editing and animation, Claude Jutra is seen in dialogue with himself at various stages of his life – becoming the spirited narrator of his own biography. Absences

A film by Carole Laganière

Producer: Colette Loumède (NFB)

Absences was inspired by Laganière’s own personal story, of the inevitable estrangement of her mother, whose memory is slowly being consumed by Alzheimer’s disease. This “anticipated separation” serves as a bridge to the film’s other subjects as they pursue their own personal quests: Ines, an immigrant who returns to her country of birth, Croatia, to find the mother who abandoned her; Deni, an American author who is finally able to search for his Quebec roots; and Nathalie, who is desperately looking for her missing sister. Through their stories, Absences explores the deepest regions of the psyche, where our sense of loss and resiliency co-exist.

Self(less) Portrait

A film by Danic Champoux

Producer: Colette Loumède (NFB)

In an age of social media, when the boundaries between private and public are constantly being redrawn, 50 people share some of their most intimate experiences and thoughts on camera. Self(less) Portrait offers a complex patchwork of intertwining themes, ultimately reflecting a collective spirit we can all identify with. Taken as a whole, these confessions—sometimes sombre, sometimes comical-compose a rich but disjointed plotline, a human mosaic that slowly takes shape in front of our very eyes, telling a story: our story.
