(Like many museums across Ontario, the Waterloo Region Museum in Kitchener has benefitted from gifts from the Royal Ontario Museum – particularly when it has upgraded exhibit cases during past renovations.

The Waterloo Region Museum has several oak exhibit cases, with brass fittings, that we believe were part of the original 1914 exhibit installations at the ROM.

This photo shows an exhibit at the Waterloo Region Museum, in place from the mid 1990s through 2008, that re-created a turn of the last century museum – complete with ROM exhibit cases containing some of the more unusual artifacts from our collection.)

(On April 16, 1912, Bill 138 formally establishing the ROM received Royal Assent to “provide a home for culture and science under the same academical roof”. Press coverage was slight owing to the sinking of the Titanic. There were to be five ROMs, each with a director. The Board of Trustees was established with Sir Edmund Walker as Chair.)

(March 19, 1914 is ROM’s official opening day.

There were 20 staff members. Hours were 10 am to 5:00 pm. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays were free admission; Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays cost 15c. The day’s events included both a luncheon and a dinner at the York Club nearby, with the official ceremonies at 3:00. The Duke of Connaught, Governor General, was given a private tour and presented with an illuminated address which shows some of the highlights of the collections. Other distinguished guests included directors of major American museums, as well as the movers and shakers of Toronto.

We know that there was a great deal of interest. In the first few days, 7345 visitors came through the turnstyles. Sir Edmund wrote that the value of the donations received was $564,850. Six months later, the finances of the museum were in crisis. The trustees ordered that there could be no acquisitions unless the money was already in hand or they were offered as exchanges by other institutions. Attendance picked up as Toronto became a leave centre for troops.)

(Mrs Warren was the only woman on the first Board of Trustees and she served for 40 years. When her husband died unexpectedly in 1909, she took over the running of his company. She was a founder of charitable institutions such as the Canadian Red Cross, which used her home on Wellesley St. as its headquarters. But her longstanding philanthropy to the ROM means that we owe her many of our iconic objects such as the luohan that was responsible for our long connection with George Crofts and which is the symbol of ROM Reproductions – an effort by our voluntters that she would certainly have approved. On many occasions, she bailed out Charles Currelly, who had spent much more than the funds available. Her family has maintained a connection with the ROM.)

(One day, Currelly was showing a distinguished visitor around at the end of the day. Thus he missed another caller, who left a card. Seeing the name of George Crofts on that card, Currelly tracked him to the King Edward Hotel.  He told this man, whose reputation as a collector of Chinese antiquities was known to London dealers, that he hadn’t a “farthing” to spend. Crofts said he had been curious to see what else the Museum held  besides the rare Luohan he had sold in London and which he had seen on a postcard in the hotel. This encounter  was responsible for $10m worth of Chinese shipments and a lifelong friendship. Crofts was ruined when a strike delayed a shipment of furs. Currelly arranged for the University of Toronto to award him an honorary degree.)

Margaret MacLean(Margaret MacLean, Educator)

Margaret MacLean

(Margaret MacLean is appointed guide to the collections. Though well-educated, she has to satisfy each Director that she is competent to guide people through his galleries and his approval must be sent in writing to Board.  She has the idea of holding story time for children an hour earlier than the lectures for adults on Saturday afternoons.

Illness forced her to stop, but she had made such a difference that she was immediately replaced and the role of public education was strengthened.)
